Baseball Thoughts
Collage (2019-2020)
Oakland A’s BIG concept is bold and unique compared to modern day baseball stadiums. Its green roof makes it an instant classic; and, its rounded geometry gives it a nostalgic feel of the Oakland coliseum. However, Its round shape does not complement the unique site. My main critic with the concept is the uninspiring outfield backdrop….
I feel the backdrop should be fun, something iconic and memorable. Going away from the symmetry and adapting to its location is the recipe to creating a memorable ballpark, just look at Fenway Park and Wrigley Field. Ideas: 1. the cranes can connect to the ballpark, 2. create unique seating options, 3. stepping away from the norm or tradition stadium model, 4. compliment the site.
Howard Terminal is a unique site with so much potential. I love to compare baseball stadiums with pinball machines. When the ball is pitched you have no idea where its going to end up. Seeing the ball interact with outfield architecture makes the homerun that much sweeter.
If you mirrored Boston’s Fenway park Left field, you will have the smallest ballpark. Benefits? Small roof, closer to the action, interesting plays off the high walls.
Diagrams
I feel these diagrams help explain my thoughts on how we can improve baseball stadiums.
-Expanding the unique outfield architecture past the foul poles
-Reduce the roof
-Introduce 2 new zones to the ballpark
